As a Copywriter, I’m always writing, reading and learning. Often, I’m learning from other Copywriters too and looking up to the ones with many years of experience and a great deal of success.
This got me thinking about the habits which highly effective and highly awesome Copywriters, have in common.
1. We ask quality questions
For a Copywriter, questions – quality ones, are extremely important.
When we meet with our clients to take a Creative Brief, we will ask question, after question, after question, to ensure we understand you, your business, your brand, what you are trying to sell and the message you are trying to get across, as best we possibly can.
Because if we don’t understand all that, then what hope do we have of writing highly effective and highly awesome copy?
2. We learn about the audience
Legendary Copywriter David Ogilvy said, “If you’re trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language, the language they use every day, the language in which they think. We try to write in the vernacular.”
Quality copy is much more effective when we understand our audience. Really ‘getting’ your buyer, is the key to getting more buyers!
So, highly effective Copywriters find out what the intended audience is all about and what they want, need and value, so that we can speak their language.
3. We understand
Highly effective Copywriters not only write well, but also understand the modern world of technology and how greatly this has impacted and altered the world of marketing.
We understand that the majority of consumers skim over copy and so require an attention-grabbing headline and subheadings throughout, to engage them to keep reading.
4. We know benefits
Features describe the product or service, but benefits explain how the product or service will benefit the customer. We understand that the difference between features and benefits is crucial!
Let’s take a mattress for example. Rather than selling springs, tempered steel and quilted fabric, an effective Copywriter (like me) will write with the aim to sell a good night’s sleep or reduced back pain.
5. We are chameleons
Because different businesses, brands, people, services and products, require different styles of writing, highly effective Copywriters are a lot like chameleons.
We have the ability to change our writing style at the drop of a hat, to ensure it suits the client and their brand perfectly, in turn, ensuring the best results.
