If you’re a fellow small business owner like myself, or are a fan of anything motivational, you’re bound to have heard of a man named Simon Sinek.  You’re also bound to have heard the term ‘Finding your WHY’.

For those of you who don’t know what I’m on about it… Simon Sinek is an Author, Motivational Speaker and Marketing Consultant, who believes that everyone should have a WHY.  Your WHY is the purpose, cause or belief which inspires you.  Simon believes that knowing your WHY provides you with a filter to make choices at work and at home, which will help you find greater fulfilment in all that you do and give you a greater understanding of WHY you do what you do!

Simon also believes that the majority of business owners know what they do and how they do what they do, but they don’t know WHY they do what they do.

Well, I’ve just found my WHY and I am extremely excited to share it with you!

What is my WHY?

When I was a child I had a severe stutter and wasn’t able to get my thoughts and feelings across as often, or as well as I would have liked.  Sometimes, I wasn’t able to get them across at all.

I would spend much longer than the average person trying to get out what I wanted to say.  So much so, that sometimes, I would often cry, yell, scream or have a tantrum because I was so extremely fed up and frustrated.  But for the most part, I would just give up.  It was exhausting and I was tired, so I simply wouldn’t bother anymore.

Of course, as with most childhood struggles, there was teasing involved too.  When I was having trouble speaking at school (even up to my early teens), my fellow classmates would say “t-t-t-t- today junior!” or “spit it out!”  They would laugh, and even walk away from the conversation, because they couldn’t be bothered waiting patiently for me to get my words out.  As you can imagine, this effected my confidence immensely.

As for the adults, they would try to finish my sentences for me, thinking this helped – It didn’t!

And so, because speaking was often such a challenge for me… I wrote! I wrote whenever and whatever I could. I wrote anything from stories, to poems, to song lyrics, to everyday life in my journal.  It was easier for me. I could express exactly what I wanted to express, when and how I wanted to express it.  The page I was writing on, or the keyboard I was typing on, wouldn’t laugh at me or try to finish my sentences.  With writing, I was free.

To this day, I still have a stutter.  However, it is nowhere near as severe as it used to be and I am now perfectly capable of holding a conversation.

I am no longer attending speech therapy, my Mum no longer has to record my speech and play it back to me or tell me to slow down, people rarely try to finish my sentences anymore and I’m no longer teased or laughed at.  In fact, many people now refer to it as ‘cute’ or ‘endearing’.

In saying all of this though and no matter how much my speech has improved, writing is still very much my preferred form of communication and expression and do you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way.

How did I find my ‘WHY’?

You may be wondering just how I found my WHY?  And no. It didn’t just arrive in my mail box one day, knock on my door or magically appear in my dreams.

My aunt is a Business Coach and a great one at that.  She doesn’t tell you how to run your business or exactly what to do.  Instead, she asks you lots of clever, insightful and intuitive questions to get you thinking, questions to inspire, motivate and drive you.

During our very first coaching session, she asked me one question which enabled me to tap into a part of me which I hadn’t before; You have a passion for writing. Why?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never really thought about it.  I just do.” – That was my initial response.

Then, I sat and thought about it and within only one minute, my whole body began to tingle as I said “My stutter!”  I began talking about my stutter and how it motivated my love of writing before I even realised it myself.

My aunt and I both teared up with pure joy and excitement and with that, she proclaimed: “You’ve found your WHY!”

Where does Craven Content come in?

All of this, made me realise where the inspiration to start my business came from.

Yes, I’m passionate about writing and I enjoy it, but it’s so much more than that.

I know what it’s like not to have a voice.  I know what it’s like not to be able to express or communicate my feelings, thoughts, knowledge and ideas and I know in my heart that I don’t want anyone else to know how that feels, if I can help it.

And so, I want to help others have a voice.  Not by speaking for them (we’ve already established this isn’t exactly a talent of mine), but by helping people who don’t enjoy writing, people who aren’t talented when it comes to writing, or people who perhaps can’t write at all.

I want to help people put their ideas, thoughts, knowledge and feelings into the written word.  By doing so, I will not only be helping them share their stories, help their businesses to grow and their passions get out into the world and shine, I will also be helping myself, by sharing one of my talents and my WHY, with the world.

That is my WHY –  what is yours?  Today and every day, I want to inspire you to share yours too.

If my WHY resonates with you, speaks to you or if you’d simply like to learn more about what I do, please get in touch with me today! I’d love to hear from you!

Let’s make some magic happen!
